New, automated technology will help reduce waste collection costs and will increase your recycling efforts so less waste ends up in the Town’s landfill. Download our guide. Overview The system

Spring is here and so are ice ruts on roads and potholes

The Town is encouraging drivers to use extra caution when going through puddles and slow down as road conditions change in this type of weather.

With daytime melting, ice may form overnight and cause slippery roads and sidewalks.

What to watch for

The Town reminds residents in order for crews to take full advantage of the warm weather, and complete rut-shaving on as many streets as soon as possible they remind people to avoid street parking in residential areas.

Graders, loaders and steam crews will be keeping catch basins clear and cutting out as much ice as possible when weather permits, we ask residents to please be patient. These snow pack conditions formed over months and will it will take time to get to bare road conditions.

During the rut-shaving work, many other roadway and drainage programs will continue:

  • Monitoring and salting/sanding
  • Pothole patching with cold mix
  • Catch basin defrosting to relieve large puddles
  • Utility cut maintenance until gravel can be permanently patched with hot mix asphalt
  • Snow removal on high-traffic priority streets
  • Sidewalk/pathway snow clearingThe Town also reminds residents how they can help during the spring melt:
  • How to help
  • Slow down when encountering a pool of water to avoid the possibility of vehicle damage and splashing pedestrians.
  • Be extra cautious on sidewalks where ice may form.
  • Watch for blue and amber flashing lights on maintenance equipment. If you encounter equipment on the road, slow down, remain at least 15 metres (2.5 car lengths) behind, and be ready to stop.
  • Report pot holes via our Community Voice feature on the website: www.cochraneontario.com/community-voice

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

SPRING MELT

With the significant amount of rain expected over the next few days, there is the potential for significant snow melt, icy and messy road conditions.

Infrastructure services will be doing its best to control the situation.

Staff will be out prioritizing the areas and doing the best they can to ensure roads urban and rural are passable, please be patient as we do the best we can to deal with the rain system and melting snow.

This system can potentially cause ponding, isolated flooding and impassable roads.

The country areas are buried in snow and water may become trapped on the road as the ditches are all full of snow.

Staff will be using heavy equipment and steamers to expose and open catch basins in the urban areas and ditches in the rural areas to get the water off the roads.

Winter Safety Concerns

WINTER SAFETY CONCERN

WITH THE RECENT ACCUMULATION OF SNOW, OUR BANKS IN TOWN ARE MUCH LARGER THAN USUAL.

INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES IS ASKING THAT YOU TALK TO YOUR LITTLE ONES ABOUT STAYING CLEAR FROM SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT AND PLAYING ON OR IN SNOWBANKS ADJACENT TO THE STREET.

WE HAVE RECEIVED REPORTS OF CHILDREN MAKING TUNNELS IN THE SNOWBANKS, SLIDING OFF THE SNOWBANKS INTO THE STREET AND EVEN REACHING FOR HYDRO AND TELEPHONE WIRES WHILE ON TOP OF THE SNOWBANKS.

AS WELL, WE HAVE RECEIVED REPORTS OF CHILDREN PLAYING AROUND SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS. THIS CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION DUE TO THE BLIND SPOTS ASSOCIATED WITH HEAVY EQUIPMENT.

PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILDREN TO STAY CLEAR OF HEAVY EQUPMENT AT ALL TIMES OF YEAR.

YOUR COOPERATION IN THIS MATTER IS GREATLY APPREACIATED AS SAFETY IS OUR NUMBER ONE CONCERN.
