Fish Consumption Advisory
In early 2021, Ontario Power Generation, and Coral Rapids Power (CRP) released information regarding a Fish Consumption Advisory, related to the Peter Sutherland Sr. Generating Station on the Abitibi River. The construction of the new head pond resulted in an expected increase in mercury and the advisory was the result of annual monitoring. The initial information centered around data collected in 2019. The monitoring is performed annually, and we now have the updated 2020 data to share. Pursuant to the monitoring program, OPG & CRP are committed to informing the public of any changes in Fish Consumption Advisories relating to this facility. Any changes will be communicated annually.
As expected, monitoring has indicated another slight increase in mercury concentration in the head pond fish population, therefore the thresholds for some sizes of fish have decreased. Attached please find the new poster, which was updated in March 2021. The advisory will also be updated on the signage posted in several locations near the generating station.
