PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Polar Bear Habitat Charity Board Ceasing Negotiations with the Town of Cochrane

COCHRANE, ONTARIO, November 27, 2020 — The Town of Cochrane has received notice from the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat Charity Board that they are ceasing negations with the Town to take up the day to day operation of the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat late Friday afternoon.

“We are surprised and confused that the Board has abruptly decided to terminate negotiations with the Town after months of progress. Council was informed by the Chair of the Board on October 19, 2020 that they remained committed to negotiations although there were outstanding items that required resolution such as the relocation of the Polar Bear Vintage Riders Museum. We are bewildered that the Board would make public statements that are very different than what we were told in person” commented Mayor Denis Clement.

Mayor Clement added “I would like to assure the public that the Habitat will remain open and it is business as usual. There is no intention to close the facility and our highly qualified and committed staff will continue to provide world class care to the bears in our facility.”

The notice from the Charity Board will be addressed at Council’s Regular meeting Tuesday December 1, 2020.
