With the start of the mild weather the Infrastructure Services Department is installing signs on Friday March 23rd, 2018 advising motorists that the half load restrictions are in effect.

The by-law is imperative in protecting sensitive road infrastructure, and serves to regulate the loads of commercial motor vehicles and trailers on certain concession roads and streets within the Town of Cochrane during a specified period of time.

Signs are erected to notify road users of this restriction. Below is the type of sign we use for this purpose, which is from Book 5 of the Ontario Traffic Manual.

Load weight will be restricted on most secondary roads throughout the Town in accordance with By-Law 179-2002, at the discretion of the Director of Infrastructure.

Restrictions are typically put into place during the spring thaw, when road damage is most likely to occur due to heavy loading.  This program identifies and imposes load restrictions on roads, or portions of roads that are weakened by excess water in the road base.  Once the road has been determined to be structurally sound, load restrictions may be rescinded.
