ONTARIO SNOWMOBILE OVAL RACERS COMING TO COCHRANE

Cochrane Polar Bear Cup preparing for a weekend of speed on the ice.

Cochrane, Ontario – January 14, 2019. The date is fast approaching for The Cochrane Polar Bear Cup to begin right here on frozen Lake Commando. Presented by The Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers, the event is happening on January 26th and 27th, 2019 and the conditions are shaping up perfectly for a thrilling weekend of sport.

Riders from near and far are sure to find a class of racing suitable for their snow machines in the inaugural Cochrane race. In addition to racing for victory, riders will be aiming for trophies and the cash purse for all classes totalling $10,000. In partnership with the Town of Cochrane and its community volunteers, the Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers (OSOR) selected Commando Park in Cochrane for their first northern Ontario course. The event includes a Saturday qualifying round and Sunday Finals and trophy ceremony. There will be numerous fields of racing based on snowmobile class and age of riders, with participants coming from across Ontario and Quebec as well as the United States.

Event organizer Dan Girard, and Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers President Mr. Carl Blight are excited about adding another event to the OSORs calendar. Blight had this to say about the race; “We are working hard to regenerate the sport of snowmobile racing in communities throughout Ontario. We are devoted to this sport, as many of our members have been participating in this style of racing for over seven decades. Our group is aiming to revive oval racing and we would love to see an annual event in Cochrane”. Town of Cochrane Mayor said, “Cochrane is proud to see the local excitement generated in ringing this activity back to Commando Lake from the seventies.”

With two weeks until race day, the OSOR and the Town of Cochrane would like to invite all members of the community out to cheer on the racers in our true Cochrane style. The gates open early for racers and hot laps will begin at 8:30am with racing starting at 10am.  Spectator day passes are $10 per person and $25 for families for this one of a kind outdoor race experience.
